Being a Good Neighbour

In any community there will be a diverse range of people with different lifestyles. It is important to build positive relationships with your neighbours. Being a good neighbour means being mindful and respectful of others.

Tenant Rights & Responsibilities

All tenants have a right to the peaceful enjoyment of your home and access to information and services to enable you to peacefully enjoy your home. Under the Residential Tenancy Agreement, you are responsible for your own conduct as well as the behaviour of all other household members and any visitors to your property.

What kind of Behaviour is not OK? Expand

Behaviour that causes, or is likely to cause, harassment, alarm or distress to other people is not ok.

This is behaviour that unreasonably interferes with other people's rights to use and enjoy their home and community such as:

  • loud noise, particularly in the evening when people are likely to be sleeping
  • abuse, intimidation or harassment
  • aggressive and threatening language or behaviour
  • vandalism
  • noise or nuisance caused by vehicles such as where they are parked or the way repairs are undertaken
  • noise or nuisance caused by pets
  • any type of criminal activity
What can you do about Noisy or Difficult Neighbours? Expand
  • If you are having a problem with your neighbours it is always a good idea to talk to them about the problem first – they might be unaware that they are upsetting you.
  • These conversations can be difficult and sometimes you don’t get the response you were hoping for. If you feel unsafe stop the conversation and leave.
  • Accept that your neighbours may have opinions and ways of doing things that are different from you – try not to be disapproving of them just because of this.
  • Accept that some neighbours like to keep to themselves and do not appreciate visits if not invited.

If you feel a person living in or visiting a YourPlace Housing property is interfering with your peace or privacy, there are a number of things you can do:

  • Contact police on 000 if you suspect or witness criminal activity, for complaints about noise including rowdy behaviour, if you experience violence or feel threatened
  • Keep an Incident Diary with dates, times and details of incidents
  • Contact YourPlace Housing to report and provide copies of your Incident Diary and police report numbers

Please remember that YourPlace is not always the most appropriate place to call if you are having a problem with neighbours, as our ability to do something about the problem may be limited.

What if my Complaint is about Illegal Activity? Expand

YourPlace is here to help you but will not carry out a criminal investigation. Suspected illegal activity should be reported to the police. Call 131 444 and report the incident to police.

In an emergency situation you should call: 000

What will YourPlace Housing do when they receive a Complaint about a Neighbour? Expand

YourPlace does not tolerate unacceptable behaviour and will respond in accordance with provisions of the Residential Tenancies Act.

Please contact your Tenancy Officer for more information and assistance. View our Complaints Management Policy in the link below.
