Meet Gail & Karen, long-term tenants of YourPlace Housing for more than 20 years!
This duo were introduced while sharing common supports but living separately.
Both Karen and Gail liked the idea of sharing a house with someone so it seemed like the perfect idea… they could not have been more right.
When talking to Gail and Karen, it is obvious the benefits they get from sharing a house while still being independent.
They have many things in common, including the type of music they enjoy, the TV shows and movies they like to watch, and a shared love of buying new DVDs. However, they also have individual strengths that, when combined, help make their household work in perfect harmony.
Karen is the household’s keen gardener, she looks after the front and back yards keeping them neat, tidy and healthy. You just have to walk around the yard to see the love and care that goes into it.
Gail is the driver in the house and sometimes the two will venture out to JB HI-FI together in search of new DVDs or, if the weather is bad, Gail will drop Karen off at the gym.
The beauty of their friendship shines in the support they have for one another, whether it’s with Gail encouraging Karen with her ten-pin bowling or learning new technology together and mastering the iPad. They both admit they sometimes have disagreements, just like any friendship or housemate situation, but they move on pretty quickly!
Living independently in the same house enables Gail and Karen to be individuals, live in their own space, have their families visit, enjoy some down time away from one another or come together in the kitchen for a chat and enjoy one another’s company. Other benefits that Karen and Gail enjoy are sharing costs of day-to-day bills like water and electricity.
The true value of this friendship shines through in the support they show one another. This truly is an enduring friendship and an excellent example of what we can achieve when we support each other.
